Punctuation

7

Punctuation helps us make sense of writing. It shows us where to pause, stop, or add extra meaning. We use different marks for different jobs – commas to break up ideas, apostrophes to show possession or missing letters, speech marks for talking, and colons, semi-colons, dashes, brackets and hyphens to link or explain. Full stops, question marks and exclamation marks bring sentences to a clear end.

Apostrophes

Learn when to use apostrophes for contractions (like don't and can't) and to show possession (like Sarah's book). You'll practise spotting where apostrophes are needed and using them correctly.

Brackets

Learn how to use brackets (parentheses) to add extra information to your sentences. Discover how brackets can make your writing clearer by showing which bits are extra details.

Colons, semi-colons and dashes

Learn to use colons to introduce lists and explanations, and semicolons to join related sentences together. These special punctuation marks help make your writing more sophisticated.

Commas
