Getting Started
What is HeyKitsu?
HeyKitsu is an adaptive learning app that helps children aged 7–11 prepare for 11+, ISEB and other school entrance examinations. The app covers four core subjects: English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
What makes HeyKitsu different is our Whole Curriculum Adaptation™ – the app automatically works out what your child needs to practise and adapts to their ability, so you don't have to manage their learning manually.
What exams does HeyKitsu cover?
HeyKitsu is based on Key Stage 2, and covers the most common UK entrance examination formats:
- GL Assessment
- CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring)
- ISEB (Independent Schools Examinations Board)
When you create your account, you'll tell us which exams your child is preparing for, and we'll tailor the content accordingly.
How does free access work?
You can try HeyKitsu without paying. Free access includes the first 25 questions in each of the four subjects – 100 questions in total. These introductory questions help us benchmark your child's ability and give you a feel for how the app works.
Once these 100 questions have been completed, you'll need a subscription to continue.
You can then access our Whole Curriculum Adaptation™ – the app automatically works out what your child needs to practise and adapts to their ability, so you don't have to manage their learning manually.
Subscriptions & Billing
How much does HeyKitsu cost?
We offer two subscription options:
- Monthly: £49 per month
- Annual: £348 per year (equivalent to £29 per month – you save £240!)
All prices include VAT.
When am I billed?
Your subscription renews automatically on the anniversary of when you first subscribed.
- Monthly subscriptions renew every month on the same date
- Annual subscriptions renew every year on the same date
For example, if you subscribe on 15th January, you'll be billed on the 15th of each month (or year, for annual plans).
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel at any time, but you must cancel at least 24 hours before your next renewal date.
If you subscribed via the iOS app (Apple): Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad → tap your name → Subscriptions → HeyKitsu → Cancel Subscription.
If you subscribed via the website (Stripe): Log in to HeyKitsu → go to Account Settings → Manage Subscription → Cancel.
What happens when I cancel?
When you cancel:
- Your subscription won't renew
- You (and your child) will keep access until the end of your current billing period
- No refunds are provided for unused time
For example, if you're on a monthly plan, paid on the 1st, and cancel on the 10th, you'll have access until the end of that month.
Can I get a refund?
iOS app subscriptions: Refund requests are handled by Apple. You'll need to request a refund through Apple directly – typically within 14 days of purchase. Apple decides whether to grant refunds at their discretion.
Website subscriptions: All sales are final. We do not offer refunds for subscriptions purchased through the website.
In both cases:
- No partial refunds are available for unused portions of your subscription
- If you cancel, you keep access until the end of your billing period, but won't receive a refund for remaining time
- We can't offer refunds for change of mind, dissatisfaction with the service, your child's exam results or issues with your own device or internet connection
By subscribing, you're requesting immediate access to HeyKitsu. This means you waive your right to cancel for a full refund once you or your child begins using the service.
If you experience technical issues with HeyKitsu itself that prevent you from accessing features you've paid for, please contact us at support@heykitsu.com and we'll work to resolve it.
Can I add multiple children to my account?
Coming soon!
This feature is not yet available, but it's coming soon! When available, you'll be able to add multiple children to your account. Each child will have their own learning profile and progress tracking, but will require a separate subscription.
Understanding Your Child's Progress
Where can I see my child's progress?
You can view your child's progress at any time by logging in to HeyKitsu (on the app or website) and tapping More then Student Progress Report.
The Student Progress Report shows you:
- Subject Progress – how far your child has progressed through each subject's curriculum (English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning), shown as a percentage, as well as a "mastery" level for each subject
- This week's lessons – how many lessons they've completed this week out of their weekly goal (resets every Monday)
- This week's study time – how many minutes they've studied this week
- Stats – including Day Streak, Total XP, Lessons Completed, Questions Answered and Total Study Time
- Skills Highlights – topics that need attention, based on recent performance
- All Skills – a breakdown of every skill area within each subject, with mastery levels
What do the mastery levels mean?
As your child answers questions, they'll progress through mastery levels for each skill:
The app adapts to keep challenging your child at the right level.
What is a "Day Streak"?
A Day Streak counts how many days in a row your child has used HeyKitsu. Even completing just one lesson is enough to keep the streak going!
Streaks can be a great motivator – many children enjoy seeing how long they can keep their streak alive.
What is XP?
XP stands for "experience points." Your child earns XP for completing lessons. The better they perform, the more XP they earn.
XP is a fun way to track progress and effort over time.
How HeyKitsu Works
What is Whole Curriculum Adaptation™?
Whole Curriculum Adaptation™ is what makes HeyKitsu different from other learning apps.
Most apps let you choose which topics to practise – but that means you (the parent) have to decide what your child should work on. HeyKitsu does this for you.
Our algorithm looks at everything your child has done across all subjects and works out the "next best" lesson for them – the one that will help them improve the most. It uses proven techniques like spaced repetition (revisiting topics at the right intervals) and interleaving (mixing topics to improve retention).
The result? Your child always gets the right challenge at the right time, without you having to manage anything.
Why are the first three lessons in each subject different?
The first three lessons in each subject are Onboarding Levels. During onboarding:
- Your child sees a consistent set of questions designed to benchmark their ability
- A friendly character guide introduces them to how the app works
- The questions span multiple topics to give us a broad picture of their strengths and gaps
After completing onboarding, the algorithm takes over and starts choosing lessons based on what your child specifically needs to practise.
How much do I need to be involved?
That's up to you! HeyKitsu is designed to work "hands-off" – the app adapts automatically, so you don't need to choose topics or manage your child's learning.
Many parents simply encourage their child to use HeyKitsu regularly (15 minutes of daily practice works best) and check the Student Progress Report occasionally to see how things are going.
Of course, you're welcome to sit with your child while they practise – they might enjoy sharing what they're learning!
If you're helping your child answer questions, make sure to turn on "Guided Mode", available in the Topics page. This lets your child practise lessons without affecting your progress. Their answers won't be recorded, and their skill levels won't change. So if they're being helped, the algorithm won't adjust and make the questions too hard for them when they're practising on their own.
Can I help my child while they use HeyKitsu?
Yes, absolutely. If your child gets stuck, you can talk through the question together. Every question has a detailed explanation that shows after they answer – whether they got it right or wrong – so you can review it together.
That said, the app is designed for independent use. The explanations are written for 10-year-olds in clear, friendly language, so most children can work through them on their own.
What is Guided Mode?
If you (or a tutor) are actively helping your child with questions, you should turn on Guided Mode. You'll find this option on the Topics page.
When Guided Mode is on:
- Your child can practise lessons without affecting their progress tracking
- Their answers won't be recorded
- Their skill levels won't change
Why does this matter? HeyKitsu's algorithm adjusts question difficulty based on how your child performs. If they're getting help and answering correctly, the algorithm might think they're ready for harder questions – which could be frustrating when they practise on their own.
Guided Mode keeps the algorithm accurate, so your child always gets the right level of challenge during independent practice.

Something's Not Working
The app isn't loading properly
Try these steps:
- Close and reopen the app – sometimes a fresh start is all it takes
- Check your internet connection – HeyKitsu needs an internet connection to work
- Update the app – make sure you're running the latest version from the App Store
- Restart your device – this can clear temporary issues
If the problem continues, please contact us at support@heykitsu.com with details of what's happening and which device you're using.
My child's progress isn't showing
Progress syncs automatically, but sometimes there can be a short delay. If progress is missing:
- Log out and log back in
- Check you're connected to the internet
If progress is still missing after 24 hours, contact us at support@heykitsu.com.
I'm being asked to pay but I already have a subscription
This usually happens if you're logged into a different account.
Check that you're logged in with the same email address that you used to purchase. If you subscribed via the iOS app, make sure you're using the same email or Apple ID.
