About Yehudi Menuhin School

Founded in 1963 by Lord Menuhin, the Yehudi Menuhin School is an independent co-educational boarding and day school in Stoke d'Abernon, Surrey, for musically gifted young people aged 8 to 19. The school offers specialist tuition in violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, classical guitar and harp, with at least half of each pupil's day devoted to musical study. It holds special status as a centre of excellence for the performing arts and receives support through the Department for Education's music and dance scheme. Most pupils are boarders, accommodated in two houses set around the original early nineteenth-century buildings. The school has capacity for up to 100 pupils, who come from all over the world and join following a comprehensive audition. Some pupils choose to spend an additional year at the school to support their entry to international conservatoires. The school aims to develop the musical potential of gifted young people regardless of background, whilst also nurturing their academic, social, emotional and physical development. It seeks to prepare pupils for adult life, whether as musicians or in other roles, as thoughtful individuals ready to contribute to the wider world.
